Ah, Edward Snowden. The very same. Let me just grab his best quote and put it into a code snippet for you to read:
Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say.” (Source: Goodreads)
He was exiled to Russia in 2013 and was granted permanent citizenship in 2020.
Why was he exiled to Russia?
He leaked government data. If Frances Haughen impressed you, think again. Snowden is the most famous whistle-blower in history for a reason. He worked in the US government, until he leaked a lot of data from it and ran off to Russia to avoid legal issues.
Why Russia? It has no extradition treaty with the US, meaning he can't get captured and sent back to the US to be tortured and murdered by a certain man obsessed with ice cream.
Why Are People Worried?
People are worried due to the Russian conflict and that Snowden could potentially be in danger. He made a tweet in January debunking this:
I'm not suspended from the ceiling above a barrel of acid by a rope that burns a little faster every time I tweet, you concern-trolling ghouls. I've just lost any confidence I had that sharing my thinking on this particular topic continues to be useful, because I called it wrong.
That clears it up, I think.
