I heard news recently [as in over a month ago] that Internet Explorer has already been replaced by Microsoft Edge back in 2015, and a Chrome based version came along earlier. in the NEWEST version of Windows 10, 20H2*, the old Edge will be replaced with the Chromium version. this is great news because the old version of Edge just SUCKS!
However...
Internet Explorer will no longer be supported on Office 365 online on August 27th 2021. This means no using Office apps on Internet explorer after that.
BUT!
Internet Explorer is a WINDOWS COMPONENT! It isn't an application! This means...
The lifecycle of Internet Explorer is tied to the Windows version. Confused?
Take Windows 10 2004. IE is getting updates because 2004 is receiving updates.
Take Windows 10 1809. IE is NOT getting updates because 1809 isn't either.
Same goes with Windows 7 Service Pack 1. Unsupported OS = No IE updates.
Windows 8.1 is getting security updates = IE is too.
This means IE will not be discontinued, but there IS a silver lining.
IE is NOT a web browser. It is a compatibility layer, so that very old websites can be accessed, like those using ActiveX controls, or Flash.
what the hell was this article? I need to redo it.
