What is Windows 10 S?
I have Windows 10 for Education, with S mode turned on.
What is S mode?
S mode is a variant of Windows 10 that is on when you get certain computers.
You can't turn it on manually, because it's an OEM thing.
It's a more restrictive version of Windows 10. You still get core features, but it's targeted at the tech illiterate.
What are the restrictions of S mode?
You can only install programs in the Microsoft Store.
you can only use Edge as your default web browser
You can only use Bing
and so on.
it's a lot less restrictive than it used to be when it launched, and you used to have to pay $50 to exit S mode.
Who TF would WANT that?
Schools, so that students get a good experience while protecting the PCs.
People who don't mind the restrictions
Tech illiterate
prisoners?
How do I enter S Mode?
You can't. It comes with a PC.
How do I check if I have S Mode?
go to Settings>System>About
scroll to the bottom. It might say something like:
If you see "In S Mode" you are in S Mode.
How to leave?
Go to the MS Store, type switch out of S Mode and follow instructions given. You'll switch out of S mode.
WARNING: You can't switch back into S mode if you switch out, so beware.
Conclusion: S mode kinda sucks, but it's good.
I don't mind S for Education
